John O'Mahoney

Owner/Trainer/Therapist

I started The Flowing Hand to bring the best in preventative health services to my clients. I do that by creating an environment where I integrate the art of massage with functional exercises and traditional yoga practice. I believe respect, communication and integration between health professionals is the key to helping you achieve the highest levels of success. By using our services together, your massage therapist knows what exercises your trainer or yoga instructor are doing with you and vice versa. I believe that this is the best way to serve our clients and our community.

Massage

I combine my naturally keen intuition with a strong background in Anatomy and Kinesiology in order to bring a powerful but nurturing form of Bodywork to my table. The art of massage has always fascinated me, but it was my comprehensive education in the Clinical Program at the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy that helped me connect my love for making people feel better with my ability to help them heal.

I have spent my career working with all types of bodies. I have worked with the elderly as well as teenagers. I have been a regular adjunct to the training programs of professional Body-Builders as well as Olympic Athletes. I love being a part the healing process as well as the drive towards competition.

My background as a personal trainer and an outdoor athlete afford me an understanding of sports injuries and the desire to perform at one’s fullest potential. I believe that everyone’s health can be enriched and strengthened through massage whether your goals are finding that competitive edge or cleansing yourself of the toxic effects of stress. Massage is one of those healthy choices that actually feels great!

Personal Training

Personal Training seems to me like the logical counterpart to Massage. Where massage loosens and helps repair tight overworked muscles, Fitness training strengthens the muscles that will bring a body back into balance.  Physical Fitness and a client’s active participation in their own health makes the biggest difference when someone is trying to make healthy choices.

My approach to personal training and exercise focuses on the health and wellness of the entire body. I have been certified as a personal trainer by the National Academy of Sports Medicine since March of 2007. My training style was developed while collaborating closely with Dr. Michael Troknya of Fairfield as we worked together to design exercise programs for our patients that would improve their posture and help them to recover from injuries or surgeries. Since that time, I spent years as an elite-level trainer at Westport’s premier Rowing Club/ Fitness Facility—The Saugatuck Rowing Club. I also brought my balanced workout routines to Norwalk’s cutting edge Physical Therapy/Personal Training Gym—Achieve Rehab & Fitness.  These days, I am training privately in Manhattan and Westport as well as seeing some select clients at the beautiful Astor Place NY Health and Racquet Club.

I start every workout with a sensible warmup and always end with a yoga based stretching routine. In between, I will keep you guessing while keeping you motivated. No grunting or yelling in your face, but be prepared to sweat. The John O'Mahoney workout never stops moving. You will tone your muscles, improve bone density, and strengthen your heart over the course of the best workout of your life.

Overall, I believe that healing is a collaborative effort and I love being a part of someone’s path towards greater health and wellness.
